As he approached his 60th year, Gillanders made a series of head studies as a reflective meditation on ageing. Essentially autobiographical, he has selected friends and acquaintances whose age and cultural interests are similar to his own.

Realism is important here, and he chose to work with a large format 10x8 camera and analogue silver gelatin prints in order to authentically produce the highest possible detail with wide tonality.
